Our Story
Matthies Builders Inc. is a custom homebuilder in the western suburbs of Chicago including Hinsdale, Downers Grove and Clarendon Hills. We specialize in building single-family homes with architectural significance that fit well within the historic villages they are built. We are a boutique builder that only builds a few homes a year, which allows us to pay close attention to every detail and cater to our clients’ needs. While working for clients, we act as a general contractor and construction consultant. We oversee every detail of design, permitting, and construction as well as assisting with the many selections necessary in building a true custom home.

Our Philosophy

We are committed to building homes that are reminiscent of an era long past where craftsmanship and quality were paramount. We incorporate the latest construction technologies, modern design techniques, and creature comforts within the parameters of historic looking homes. Our commitment extends to using contractors that exceed the levels of quality that most homeowners, who appreciate high value, are accustomed to.

Family Ties
David R. Matthies is the fourth generation of his family to live in Downers Grove. His mother’s family, the Dicke family, settled in Downers Grove in the late 1800’s from Germany. His Grandfather, Grant Dicke, was the Fire Chief in Downers Grove for over forty years and successfully operated Dicke Oldsmobile in Downers Grove for many years. David’s paternal grandfather, Dr. Richard A. Matthies moved to Hinsdale in 1936 and began working at Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital, now Hinsdale Hospital in which he worked for over 50 years. As you can see, both sides of his family have been long-time residents in these towns and have not only witnessed but contributed to their evolutions. This strong family tie to the histories of these villages has helped to form the construction philosophy of Matthies Builders.

Our team approach allows us to keep clients informed and engaged throughout the entire project using critical path scheduling. We provide you with schedules of construction throughout the building process. This keeps you informed and aware of when work will be completed.

David R. Matthies :: President
David started his career as a carpenter, which evolved into a foreman position, spanning eight years. He then became a superintendent for a well-respected Hinsdale builder for the next three years. David’s need for more control over the end product resulted in the opening of Matthies Builders, Inc. in 1997. His strong field experience has given David the ability to command the necessary respect of the sub contractors. David manages Matthies Builders’ jobsites with an eye for detail that not many homebuilders could begin to offer. He is also responsible for scheduling, bidding, quality control, and supervising job sites. On a daily basis David is on every job site and available to answer questions that may arise.

Joanna Matthies :: Accounting & Client Relations
Joanna joined Matthies Builders in 1999. Joanna assists clients with the many selections required in completing a truly custom home and running the general operations of the company. Joanna is always researching new products and finding the most current products and ideas available. She is also responsible for all of the financial operations of the company and assisting with clients on the construction loan process. Joanna also visits the job sites on a regular basis and has gained great respect from the sub-contractors for her knowledge of construction.

Dave Hill :: Superintendent of Construction
Dave has been in the construction business since 1983. Dave’s credentials include owning his own carpentry company for many years and being a Construction Superintendent with two other custom builders for 6 years. Dave joined Matthies Builders in 2004 and is a great asset to the company. His experience, eye for detail, communication skills, and complete overall knowledge of construction gives Matthies Builders an edge on the competition. Dave’s friendly and calm demeanor helps create strong relationships with our clients and sub-contractors.

Ben Anderson :: Superintendent of Service Work
Ben joined Matthies Builders in October 2006 after working in a large lumber yard as an inside salesman. His construction material knowledge and outgoing, friendly personality were a great addition to our team. Ben works with clients once they have moved into their home and is responsible for completing and coordinating punch list and warranty work. Our clients will be happy to know they can contact Ben to take care of issues at their home instead of a list of sub-contractors phone numbers they would have to deal with on their own. Matthies Builders prides themselves on service and keeping clients happy long after the closing.

We work with our clients from early on in the design phase all the way through the completion of their homes and often helping with minor changes after completion to help tailor the home to their needs.
